Becoming a new parent brings much happiness but quite a few challenges. Having a disability can make these challenges greater. I am a wheelchair user and I have been for most of my adult life, and for the most part I manage without assistance.
When I gave birth to my son, I realised that despite the fact that I was in a hospital there were no wheelchair accessible maternity wards, no suitable shower facilities and no access to the baby bathing area. I had to request an adjustable bed when they realized that there were no accessible cots.
No one had ever considered the possibility that a wheelchair user would have a child. Does That Seem Fair To You?
