My name is Katriona from Donegal. I am an IWA service user in Letterkenny ROC. I live in a rural part of Donegal where transport is practically non-existent. For example, my friends and I wanted to get a bus from Letterkenny to Derry to attend an Arts Exhibition in Belfast. I telephoned Bus Eirean to see if the bus going to Derry would be wheelchair assessable, their reply was that they could not cater for my needs !!! As a result of this, I had to book an accessible taxi to take me to Derry. When I was in Derry I was able to get an assessable bus with no problems to continue on my journey to Belfast.
It would be interesting to ask any sitting TD’s, Ministers, in particular the Minister of Transport, Tourism and Sport Paschal Donohoe or An Taoiseach Enda Kenny to get into a wheelchair for the day and see how hard it is for them to get around outside the main cities in Ireland. We have two main routes into the county Dublin to Letterkenny, Galway to Derry, but yet in 2016 we cannot provide transport for those in wheelchairs!
Does That Seem Fair To You?
