Limerick railway station – it was decided (probably by Irish Rail) and planning permission given by Limerick Council for the front of the railway station to be dug up and the disabled bays replaced by a pretty little plaza. Lovely!!
Now people with disabilities – in fact anyone who qualifies for a disabled parking permit (because to get one you must only be able to walk short distances or not at all) – have effectively been barred from Limerick railway station. Why? Because the disabled parking bays have now been placed approximately half a kilometre away from the ramp which is the only access to the station. I am a powered wheelchair user and it took me almost 5 minutes to get from the bays – past where non-disabled people can access the station – to the bus station to the only accessible ramp into the station.
Imagine an older person trying to walk that distance? My father in law couldn’t because he is in chronic heart failure – it would kill him. Could your parents? My husband has now been barred from the railway station because he can only walk less than 100 ft on his prosthetic legs and crutches.
I have been told by the station master that this is a “temporary” measure which will only last for anything from a year to five years – depending on government funding for the next phase of the project. Apparently funding for this first stage has already been stopped…but only til after the election he assured me.
This is not acceptable. I am 53 years old and every day of my life have had to fight for crumbs off the table – rights that everyone else takes for granted. I pay my taxes, support my family and yet I am a second class citizen in my own country. First I cannot use a bus outside of a city, and now basically disabled people are told we can no longer use the trains either!! Public transport my eye!! Am I not a member of the public?
Does That Seem Fair To You?
