I have recently completed my degree in Administration and thankfully currently in employment with the Donegal Centre for Independent Living in Letterkenny (DCIL), however I’m a wheelchair user with spina bifida and Hydrocephalus who lives in Inishowen, it is a 24 mile journey to get to my place of work, unfortunately due to no accessible transport available in my area this means I have to depend on my father (Who’s Great)to give up his time and bring me to work and collect me again. It actually cost me more to work than not work. I am on a CE scheme and the government has taken away most of my Disability Benefit because I want to gain work experience and be active. I have additional Personal Assistant needs when working and transport costs but the government do not consider this or provide any supports to assist me !!!!
I have studied the “Berkeley California,Independent Living Movement” as part of my Leader training with DCIL and I can very much relate to their frustrations – given that I too had a Personal Assistant and transport support throughout my college life funded by Dept of Education but no such support levels to let me start a career effectively and independently.
I ask you….Does that seem fair to you?
