My name is Gina and I am from Galway. I was born with a visual impairment and as a result I only have partial sight in my right eye. Due to my own experiences and challenges in my life, I feel I have to stand up and advocate for disability awareness in Ireland.
Over time I have also developed vertigo from my visual impairment and I had a bad fall in Galway City Centre over the recent Christmas break. Our curbs, roads and pavements are completely inadequate and are an accident waiting to happen. The pavements and curbs can be dangerous to all people of disabilities and the elderly also. My own father suffers from parkinson’s disease and the roads and paths around Galway are a major challenge for us.
The whole disability sector is huge, we represent so many people, so we need to come together and sing off the one hymn sheet.
I also have a guide dog for aid, as I attempt to get around Galway City. We need to stand up to the TD’s and show we are united and they cannot take away our PA hours and take money away from the disability sector.
Disability needs to be the number one social priority for this incoming governmet.
